THE SMALL-JOB PROBLEM

Why won’t anyone come out for a small job?

Because the big shops can’t make money on them. Two hours of work doesn’t pay for a fleet, a crew and a dispatcher — so your call slides to the bottom of the list, or you get quoted a number designed to make you go away.

Ohmstead is built the other way around. One licensed electrician, low overhead, and a schedule that has room for the outlet in your garage.

  • Small jobs are the whole business, not the leftovers nobody wants.
  • You get a straight answer on the phone instead of a callback that never comes.
  • The price is agreed before anything gets touched — no hourly meter running.
  • 7 years on the tools, and a Virginia journeyman license behind the work.

THE SHOW-UP PROMISE

If we say Tuesday at two, we’re there Tuesday at two.

Ask anyone around Hampton Roads about the last tradesman they hired and you’ll hear the same story. An appointment was made. A bigger job came along. Nobody called. An afternoon off work, gone.

That is not how this works. Your appointment is an appointment.

  • A real arrival window

You get a specific window, not a vague “sometime Tuesday.” Nobody should have to burn a day off work waiting on an electrician.

  • A call if anything changes

If something genuinely goes sideways on my end, your phone rings before the window starts — not an hour after it has already passed.

  • Your job never gets bumped

Small jobs are the whole business here. There is no bigger job sitting in the queue waiting to push yours to next week.

WHAT WE DO

Residential electrical work, done properly.

If it’s on this list, it’s a job we want. Not sure where yours fits? Call and ask — it’s a free conversation.

Outlets & Receptacles

New outlets where you need one, dead outlets brought back, and loose or scorched receptacles replaced before they become a problem.

Switches & Dimmers

Failed switches swapped, three-way switches finally wired the way they should be, and dimmers on the lights you actually want dimmed.

Light Fixtures

Fixture replacements, new vanity and dining lights, closet and hallway lighting, and fixtures hung where there wasn't one before.

Ceiling Fans

Fan replacements, new installs on existing boxes, remote-controlled fans, and fixing the ones that wobble or hum.

Ring & Doorbell Cameras

Video doorbells, floodlight cameras, and the transformer upgrade that stops your doorbell dying every few weeks.

GFCI & Safety Devices

GFCI and AFCI protection where code calls for it — kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry and exterior outlets.

Smart Switches

Smart switches and dimmers wired correctly, including the missing-neutral problem that stops most DIY installs cold.

Troubleshooting

Dead circuits, breakers that won't stay on, flickering lights, and the outlet that's worked fine for ten years until yesterday.

HOW IT WORKS

Three steps. No runaround.

  1. 01

    Tell us what's going on

Call, text, or send the form. Describe the problem in plain words — you don't need to know the electrical terms for it.

  2. 02

    Get a guaranteed price

Estimates are free. On most jobs you'll have a firm number before any work starts, so there's no meter running and no surprise at the end.

  3. 03

    Work gets done right

A licensed journeyman arrives inside the window you were given, does the work to code, cleans up afterward, and shows you what changed before leaving.

QUESTIONS

The things people ask before they call.

How much is my job going to cost?

Estimates are free, and on most jobs you'll get a guaranteed price before any work begins. You agree to the number first — there's no hourly meter running and no different figure at the end.

Do you do panel upgrades, service changes or whole-house rewires?

Not at the moment. Ohmstead is focused on smaller repairs and installations: outlets, switches, fixtures, fans, cameras, safety devices and troubleshooting. If your job turns out to be bigger than that, tell me anyway and I'll point you toward someone who handles it.

How soon can you get out here?

Usually quickly. The schedule is flexible and that includes evenings and weekends. Call or text and you'll get a real answer about timing, not a promise of a callback.

What happens if you have to reschedule?

Your phone rings before the window starts, and we find a new time that actually suits you. What you won't get is silence and a wasted afternoon. Small jobs are the whole business here, so there's never a bigger job waiting to bump yours.

Are you actually licensed?

Yes. Licensed Journeyman Electrician — Virginia Tradesman Lic. #2710088781, with 7 years of electrical experience. The license number is on this page so you can look it up on the Virginia DPOR website yourself.

What if I call after hours?

You'll still get through. Calls and messages are answered day or night, so you're not waiting until Monday morning to find out whether anyone is coming.

Do I need to be home while you work?

For anything inside the house, yes — someone needs to let us in and be there while the power is off. For exterior work like a floodlight camera, we can usually sort out access ahead of time.
